Regatta - Descriptions

The organization of Kaløvig Bådelaug was founded in 1968 by a group of enterprising sailors. These future members also built the boat harbour. As the sailing activities increased the harbour was expanded, but the space soon ran out due to the close proximity to the thermal heating station of Studstrupværket. In 1983, after many years in close proximity of Studstrupværket, Lady Luck smiled down on Kaløvig Bådelaug. The thermal heating station had also become too large and needed to expand, so they made an agreement with Kaløvig Bådelaug. The boat harbour was to be destroyed and rebuilt 500 metres south of the previous location.

Once rebuilt by the members it quickly grew into a modern yacht club with the following facilities:

  • Conference centre with modern audio-visual equipment
  • Overnight accommodations
  • The restaurant “Klubhuset”

Furthermore, Kaløvig Bådelaug is used as a training centre for Danish elite sailors and young talents. Due to all their work with and for their sailors, Kaløvig Bådelaug has managed to supply Denmark with medals incl. Olympic medals of various sorts, international acclaim and even crew members for America’s Cup boats. These achievements are considered to be one of the reasons why Kaløvig Bådelaug has increased its number of members to more than 1,000, which places them between the five largest yacht clubs in Denmark.

One of the most important goals for Kaløvig Bådelaug has been to promote the interest in sailing; especially among youngsters. Their interest may be kindled by the prospect of meeting other youngsters, as well as experienced sailors from all over the world and participating in various events – both competitive and social – throughout the year.

Regattas in Kaløvig Bådelaug

Like youngsters, regattas are of high priority. Kaløvig Bådelaug has a long and successful tradition of organizing both national and international regattas.

Kaløvig Bådelaug has the reputation as well as all the necessary facilities, equipment and know-how to attract sailors to participate in the regattas.

On land, the dinghy area with the ramp, the houses, the campsite and the club house provides what the sailors and race officials needs for preparation and relaxation.

Behind all the national and international regattas is the regatta committee. It consists of organizing chairmen, race officers, international judges, umpires and equipment personnel; all of which have great experience when it comes to organizing high level regattas.

In the past decades Kaløvig Bådelaug has hosted several Danish and Scandinavian Championships, as well as several European Cups for the Laser Class.

Kaløvig Bådelaug has also hosted some full scale regattas that are worth mentioning: Laser Worlds (1989), Nations Cup Qualifier (1991), Hobie Cat European Championship (1991), 14 Foot European Championship (1992), Europe Class Worlds (1993), Star European Championship (1993), Danish Olympic Spring Regatta (1994), Contender European Championship (1997), Yngling World Championship (2000), Star European Championship (2001), Europe Class Youth European Championship (2003).
